Shearwater Research makes dive computers and rebreather electronics.
Through steady R&D investments, Shearwater Research Inc. makes innovative and simple to use dive computers and rebreather electronics. Shearwater Research products are widely accepted as the world-leading technical diving and rebreather computers.
The owner of Shearwater Research, Bruce Partridge, has designed and implemented computer systems since 1972. In a career that spans decades, Bruce has worked in design, operations, and programming in computers and data communications. In 1996, he sold his successful computer consulting company to a multinational.
Bruce bought a CCR2000 in 1998. The inventor of the CCR2000, Dan Wible, spent many hours discussing and describing the CCR2000 and its electronics, and so began Bruce's passion for rebreathers and their controllers. In 2003, after a dive trip with Gordon and Kim Smith, he began work on a controller and HUD for the Classic KISS. Several units were made and sold, but the success of the product was limited by its size and weight.
The next project was the Shearwater for the Megalodon. This was an OEM project where Shearwater produced circuit boards according to the Innerspace specification, and then Innerspace packaged the electronics. Shearwater produced 70 of those units.
In 2005, with the experience gained from the previous years of development, Bruce decided to redesign from the ground up using the latest techniques and components. The process control industry provided a wealth of knowledge on controllers, alarms and many other design decisions. This solid foundation was paired with an overriding desire to produce electronics that hide the complexity behind simple, easy to understand, interfaces.
Since Lynn and Bruce regularly dive the products, the electronics are continually being tested and evaluated. Changes and enhancements are reviewed with the engineering team and the product line continues to improve. Shearwater Research Inc. computers are the fastest selling in the technical diving market sector, and Shearwater Research Inc. rebreather electronics are the most widely used OEM rebreather electronics.
